Debit Cards – FAQs on Tokenisation (Card-On-File-Tokenisation)

As per RBI mandate, starting from 1st October, 2022 the card details (card number, CVV, card expiry date) and any other sensitive information related to cards cannot be stored by merchants for processing online transactions. The card number will be replaced by a Token which is generated online. The entire process is called Tokenisation.

The following are the FAQs for the benefit and awareness of our Bank’s customers.

1 . What is Tokenisation?

Tokenisation refers to replacement of actual or clear card number with an alternate code called the “Token”. This token contains no personal information that can be directly accessed making it the most secure method to complete the merchant payments online.

2 . What is the benefit of tokenisation?

A tokenized card transaction is considered safer as the actual card details are not shared / stored with the merchants.

3 . How do I tokenize my card with online Merchant?

In the payment page of online merchant, you need to enter your card details, followed by verification via OTP and then a token will be generated associated with your card. This token will be saved by the online Merchant on behalf of actual card data for faster checkouts.

4 . Is tokenisation of card mandatory for a customer?

No. Customer can choose whether or not to let his / her card tokenised.

5 . What if I do not Secure/Tokenise my Card before 1st October 2022?

If you had saved your card details at any merchant website/application, the same will be deleted before 1st October 2022. To pay each time, you will have to enter full card details.

6 . Who can perform tokenisation and de-tokenisation?

Tokenisation and de-tokenisation can be performed only by the card issuing Bank or VISA / Mastercard / RuPay, who are referred as authorised card networks.

7 . Is the Card-on-File Tokenization (CoFT) guideline applicable for both Credit and Debit cards?

Yes. Starting 1st Oct 2022, Card-on-File Tokenization (CoFT) guideline is applicable for all the Cards namely Credit, Debit, Prepaid cards.

8 . Is Tokenisation applicable for International Card-on-File transactions?

No. Tokenisation is applicable only for Domestic transactions.

9 . Whether the token generated for a card has expiry?

Card Expiry date is the token expiry date.

10 . Whether the token on one online merchant website/App be used for another?

No. Token registered on one merchant cannot be used on another merchant. Each merchant will have a unique token associated with every card saved on that Merchant. Token cannot be used for any other card that you might have or on any other merchant.

11 . Whether I need to secure/Tokenise my card for POS transactions which I do at merchant outlets?

No. Card on file tokenisation is applicable only for the Online transactions and that for saving of card in the merchant website/Apps.

12 . Once tokenized, whether I will able to see the card details on the merchant page?

Yes. The last 4 digits of the card and its respective card network logo will be shown on the merchant page.

13 . What will happen to the token once my card (including Add-On card) gets replaced or renewed or reissued or upgraded?

Create a new token in the online merchant website/App.

14 . If the cardholder has already registered for e-Mandate for Standing Instructions (SI), will it get affected? If yes, How? What should be done to enable e-Mandate for SI transactions?

If the cardholder has already registered for e-Mandate for Standing Instructions that will no longer be valid as the merchant should not be storing the Full card number anymore from 1st Oct, 2022. Hence the customer needs to freshly register for Card-on-File tokenization on the card and then give consent for the e-mandate for SI transactions. If the customer chooses not to opt for tokenization, e-mandate for SI transactions cannot be enabled on the card.

15 . Any charges applicable for availing this tokenisation service?

No Charges applicable for the tokenisation service. This is to secure the card details so that customers can have safe and secure online transactions using KVB cards.
